This performance is unlikely to have happened at all, let alone to have worked. It emerged during an experimental music workshop deep in the mountains of Georgia.
These settings often come with a serious aesthetic: the performers behind a laptop, unsmiling. I wanted to complicate that a bit, so I made an analogue tape-based performance in which a ridiculously repetitive, yet deeply sincere and highly catchy song is recorded live, layer by layer.
I called it Able-Tom Live. And people were singing the song for days.
As the cassette wheels begin to turn, Bicycle (Today) lures its audience into a looping trance of sublime silliness and collective release. Now you know the outcome of the show, but what happens in between is another thing entirely.
¬ Created with the support of the Crossing into the Electric Magnetic residency at AqTushetii, Georgia.
¬ Performed at Make-up e.V. for Raum Halten Festival - supported by Berlin Bezirkskulturfonds Mitte.
